What Is a Lexile Measure?

A Lexile measure is a universal metric that places individual reading ability and the complexity of a book, article, or text on the same scale. Expressed as a numeric value followed by the letter “L,” Lexile measures range from below 0L to 2000L.

How Lexile Measures Work

Formative, interim, and summative assessments, linked to the Lexile scale, provide a supplemental, agnostic measure of reading ability. While the form of reading comprehension assessment can vary, it generally includes vocabulary knowledge, sentence comprehension, and passage complexity.

Student test data is processed and a Lexile measure calculated, allowing the student’s measure to accompany the outcome of the assessment. MetaMetrics® tracks Lexile measures across multiple test events, comparing prior measures with current assessment results.

MetaMetrics also calculates the Lexile measure of a piece of authored text using linguistics and artificial intelligence to analyze sentence structure and word difficulty against a unique language corpus to derive a Lexile measure for both early-reader and advanced texts.

MetaMetrics applies the most appropriate and important variables for early and advanced readers. Using the syntactic and semantic challenges that a text presents to a reader, MetaMetrics measures advanced reading text complexity by examining the characteristics of word frequency and sentence length. And, when a text designed for early readers is detected, we apply additional variables for word and sentence characteristics such as decodability, patterning, and repetition.

“Super Readers books are carefully developed using the Lexile framework to ensure that content is the right level for readers between the ages of 3 and 11, who are all at different stages of their literacy journey. By writing content that is interesting, factual, and at the right level to challenge readers, we can boost reading skills in a very natural and effective way.”
